February 28th, 2009  Reproduction Knobs:

Repros of old style Delta 14" bandsaw steel knobs.

One metal working project on the back burner had been replacing some missing steel knobs on the 890 model Delta bandsaw.   The machine came with two, so I stripped one down from rusty and painted to clean and bright, then took measurements and churned out a practice replacement last week.   I needed to order the correct knurls (KP size) to complete the job, which arrived a couple days ago, and below is the result.

knobs, old and new

I set up for production with the remaining 12L14 steel I had leftover. Here we've got a few pieces at various steps of processing.

Blanks are mounted on the lathe, a face cut and a shoulder cut are first made.   Afterward, a hole and counterbore are drilled and the hole tapped 3/8's by 16 tpi.

The piece is removed, flipped around and mounted on a screw stud for the next operations.   They're faced off to length, then the cove is cut using a piece of 5/8" HSS ground to the correct profile.

Lastly, they are turned to final diameter, rounded over with a file, and knurled.
